Summer feels easy, no frostbite or frozen waterers, yet the questions I hear from backyard flock owners spike every July and August. Heat, smoke, and swaps combine into a hidden risk window. This piece covers five risk factors and the fixes that help.

Why Summer Heat Sets the Stage for Summer Respiratory Disease
Chickens don’t sweat. Panting is their main cooling method, pulling more irritants through the lungs.
Chronic heat stress goes further: broilers held at 95°F for 12 hours daily developed lung congestion and a weaker blood-air barrier (Wu et al., 2023, Poultry Science). Heat also weakens immunity, correlating with more infections (Wasti et al., 2020, Animals).
A bird doesn’t need to get sick from heat alone; heat lowers the bar, so an everyday germ turns into real illness.
How Wildfire Smoke Compounds the Problem
Wildfire smoke carries fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that reaches deep into the lungs, driving inflammation (Skibiel et al., 2023, Livestock and Wildfire Hub, UC Davis). Poultry research agrees: airborne particles trigger oxidative stress and airway inflammation (Wang et al., 2023, PMC).
Here’s a myth I hear constantly: “chickens are basically immune to smoke since they’re outside animals.” Not true. Air sacs plus lungs move a large volume of air per breath, meaning more particulate exposure than similar-sized mammals.

The Hidden Risk of Summer Swaps and Trade Meets
Summer is peak season for poultry swaps and fairs, when chickens, waterfowl, and game birds crowd together, a documented disease amplifier (Maine Cooperative Extension, Bulletin #2216).
Buyers rarely get verified health records. With infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT), recovered birds become lifelong latent carriers that silently shed virus under stress (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2024); backyard flocks are a flagged reservoir for reintroduction (Open Veterinary Journal, 2025, PMC). Mycoplasma gallisepticum spreads similarly through untested sales (Marouf et al., 2021, PMC).
A second myth: “if a bird looks healthy at a swap, it’s safe without quarantine.” False. Latent carriers show zero signs between flare-ups; a healthy-looking bird isn’t a safe bird.
Poultry Swap Biosecurity Steps That Actually Protect Your Flock
Good poultry swap biosecurity starts before you load the car:
- Quarantine a full 30 days, after returning.
- Physically separate quarantine birds: a different building or far corner, dedicated feeders and waterers.
- Do chores in order: healthy flock first, quarantined birds last.
- Check your flock before any event; skip it if any bird looks ill.
My caveat: quarantine limits risk, it doesn’t erase it. Mycoplasma and ILT can stay quiet through the entire 30-day quarantine, then recrudesce (flare back up) under a new stress like heat, transport, or molting. Thirty clean days isn’t a guarantee, so keep watching beyond it. Ventilation and Dust Control in Summer Coops
Ammonia is called out in commercial poultry literature as a serious hazard that breaks down mucosal barriers, but that data mostly comes from crowded, enclosed barns.
For a typical backyard coop with an open run, ammonia is usually mild and manageable, not a major disease driver. It’s a concern mainly when coops are overcrowded or litter stays too damp.
The bigger summer culprit for backyard birds is dust. Dry litter combines with fine particulates, and any smoke drifting in, to irritate the airway even in low-ammonia setups. Good cross-ventilation helps.
A few ammonia dust ventilation coop habits worth adopting:
- Increase airflow on hot days, avoiding direct drafts on roosting birds.
- Keep litter moisture balanced: too dry raises dust, too wet raises ammonia.
- Don’t overcrowd the coop in summer.
